PROBLEM:
The following message appears in Jeppesen Distribution Manager (JDM) when attempting to program an update for a device that uses removable storage media (e.g. SD card, USB flash drive):

"Wrong type of device: expected: removable but the actual card type is: hard disk"

CAUSE:
Using an older version of JDM (version 3.13 or earlier) on a Mac with macOS Ventura 13.

Changes implemented by Apple in macOS Ventura 13 cause JDM version 3.13 and earlier to malfunction. JDM version 3.13 and earlier are not able to detect removable drives properly, such as SD cards and USB drives, as shown in the following examples:

JDMMac_ChooseLocation_4.jpg

RESOLUTION:
Update JDM to version 3.14.

CAUSE:
The removable storage media is either not connected to the computer or is not detected by the operating system.

RESOLUTION:
Open Windows Explorer or Computer in Windows, or Finder in macOS and look for the removable storage device. If it does not appear, try disconnecting and reconnecting it. If using an external memory card reader, try disconnecting and reconnecting the memory card reader as well. Reboot the computer and see if the removable storage device appears. If it still does not appear, replace the storage media or memory card reader.

CAUSE:
The removable storage media has been assigned a drive letter of A or B on a Windows computer. JDM will only display drives with letter assignments of C or above on Windows computers.

RESOLUTION:
Change the drive letter assignment in Windows by following these steps:

Go to Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Computer Management.
On the left side of the Computer Management console, select Disk Management.
Right-click on the removable disk and select Change Drive Letter and Paths...
Select Change, then select an available drive letter of C or greater. The C: drive is normally reserved for the hard disk where the operating system is installed, and the D: and E: drives are usually used for a secondary hard disk or an optical drive. Select F or greater, but make sure to select a drive letter that is not already in use.Select OK, then OK again to save the change.

CAUSE:
The removable storage media is identified by Windows as a local disk instead of a removable storage device. Some specific models of USB flash drives (such as Sandisk Cruzer drives) are identified by Windows as local disks instead of removable storage devices.

RESOLUTION:
There is no way to change how Windows identifies the device, as this is coded into its firmware and driver.
