Failure when transferring the INDS Charts (DDL Capable) database to a storage device

PROBLEM:
When transferring the Honeywell INDS Charts (DDL Capable) database to a USB storage device, the transfer may stay at 100% for a very long time and may appear to be stuck. Depending on the coverage area of the subscription and the transfer speed of the USB storage device, it can take up to an hour or more for the transfer to complete, and may end up failing to transfer.

CAUSE:
The Honeywell avionics in certain aircraft such as the Gulfstream G650 Block 2 is capable of accepting the charts database in either a full data set, or a Delta Data Loading (DDL) data set. During a DDL data load to the Honeywell avionics, only the charts that have changed are loaded into the Honeywell avionics, reducing the time it takes to perform a data load. However, the Jeppesen Distribution Manager (JDM) application must perform additional processing when transferring the database to the USB storage device, creating individual charts database files for each airport. This can be up to 7,000 files for a worldwide coverage, compared to around 30 files for a full, non-DDL data set. This substantially increases the amount of time it takes to transfer the database to the USB storage device. USB storage devices that have lower transfer rates can cause the transfer to take as long as an hour, and the transfer may end up failing.

RESOLUTION:

  • Use a newer USB storage device with a faster transfer speed.
  • Apply a geographic or runway length subset to the charts database to reduce the number of airports included.
  • Try transferring the INDS Charts (DDL Capable) database to the hard drive of the computer first, followed by manually copying the database from the hard drive to the USB storage device.
    1. Create a new folder on the C:\ drive of the computer named INDS Charts.
    2. In the Jeppesen Distribution Manager (JDM) application, transfer the INDS Charts (DDL Capable) database to the new folder.
    3. After the transfer is complete, open the new folder that was created on the C:\ drive and copy the TerminalCharts and TerminalChartsDDL folders to the USB storage device.
  • If the Honeywell avionics in the aircraft does not require using a DDL data set, contact your Jeppesen Account Manager or Jeppesen Sales Support to determine if the charts subscription can be changed to a non-DDL, standard INDS charts subscription.
