QUESTION:

For the localizer feather depicted in the planview of ILS procedure charts, the end of the feather is farther out on some charts than it is on other charts. Examples: KORD ILS or LOC Rwy 28C (21-16) depicts the end of the feather beyond the MEMAW fix, D19.0 IVZE. On the KLAX ILS or LOC Rwy 25L (11-7), the end of the feather is just beyond the GIGII fix, D7.5 ILAX. Is the LOC/DME service volume of the localizer being depicted by the length of the feather in the planview of the chart?

ANSWER:

The length of the localizer symbol in the profile does not represent the operational or expanded service volume. Its depiction in the planviewis to indicate that it is a front course and the sizing is only based on the space available. The minimum length will typically be at the FAF, but the length is customized to the chart based on the scale and amount of information located along the final approach course.
